PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
User needs assessment
System design/implementation
3D rendering engine for visualization
Increased flexibility and extensibility of platform

THE PROJECT

FUS Instruments develops pre-clinical focused ultrasound medical devices. These products are developed in-house and the software that operated them had been developed organically over the years.

Due to the nature of the development, FUS Instruments ran into limitations with continued support regarding the extensibility and maintenance of their product’s software.

White Rock Technology investigated what clients were trying to accomplish with FUS Instruments’ products. Through this user needs assessment, critical requirements and specifications for workflow were identified along with the need for visualization and extensibility. Additional challenges, as well as short term and long term goals related to their product line, were identified.

THE CHALLENGES

The existing code base was tightly coupled to their hardware design and as the number of hardware combinations continually increased, the software had become too cumbersome to maintain.

As FUS Instruments considered expanding their product line to include a bench-top system, they decided to audit their code base and considered replacing it with one that would reduce this coupling and offer higher cohesion.

It was at this point that James O’Reilly and White Rock Technology were engaged as technology consultants.

We have already recommended White Rock Technology to other medical device companies because of their effectiveness. They are experienced at working in a regulated environment, diligent, and follow strong documenting and Q/A policies. – Daniel Pajek, President

THE SOLUTION

FUS Instruments is committed to delivering a better user experience. As a result, the new software provides a more robust and user-friendly interface and substantially improves overall software stability. In addition, White Rock Technology applied their expertise in 3D visualization and developed a rendering engine in order to communicate information in a clear and compelling way and further differentiate FUS Instruments from their competitors.

White Rock Technology built a plug-in architecture to support the various hardware configurations that FUS Instruments already had in the field. Additionally, some clients have unique and specialized uses of the platform; this particular design enables customization to support their specific areas of research.

ADDED VALUE

White Rock Technology worked with FUS Instruments under an accelerated timeline to complete their software development to coincide with a key trade show. In addition to over-delivering on the requirements of the software, White Rock Technology proposed an additional “demonstration mode” that distinguished the product as best-in-class.

We were hoping for a piece of software that would visually impress and their graphical design is very advanced for the medical device industry. White Rock Technology has given us the best software package in our space. – Daniel Pajek, President

As a result of White Rock’s engagement, FUS Instruments has software that is extensible and scalable for the future success of their product line. White Rock Technology continues to work as an ongoing technology consultant in partnership with FUS Instruments.
